Hunter Biden isn’t the only shady relative making loads of money from the Biden name. The National Review writes, “Jim Biden, the brother of the president, reportedly was enlisted to help settle a business dispute between a U.S. construction company and the Saudi government because of his relation to then–vice president Joe Biden.
The negotiations, involving the Philadelphia-based Hill International and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, took place in 2012 and yielded a $132 million settlement, according to May 2021 affidavits obtained by the Daily Mail that revealed Biden’s brother’s role.
Jim Biden became engaged after Hill and its attorneys got into a legal disagreement over the payout from the Saudis. Three law firms, R.L. Walker & Co., Lankford & Reed, and Poblete Tamargo, were originally hired by Hill to help collect the massive sum of money in “damages arising out of a construction project claim” in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi government owed Hill the money for its work building desalination plants in the country in the 1980s.
One firm, Lankford & Reed, alleged that Hill recruited Jim Biden in 2011 to broker a secret agreement with the Saudis to settle the dispute and renege on its 40 percent payment promise to Lankford that was stipulated in their contract. A February 2011 contract obtained by the Daily Mail details the terms of the firm’s fees, stating that Lankford would be entitled to “40% of the recovery.” It was signed by Thomas Lankford of the law firm and Hill CEO Irvin Richter.”
The Daily Mail reported that according to obtained affidavits, Jim Biden was picked because Saudi Arabia “would not dare” ignore the then vice president’s brother when a construction company called Hill International demanded $140 million they claimed was owed to them after building a desalination plant that had been built during the 1980s. This isn’t the first time the Biden White House has turned a blind eye to brothers using connections to rake in millions from foreign countries.
According to the documents, the newspaper reported, Jim told a former senior US Treasury official working as a private investigator that he was hired to negotiate with the Saudis ‘because of his position and relationship’ to VP Joe Biden – who led delegations to Saudi Arabia at the time, the British newspaper wrote.
[Thomas] Sullivan claimed the President’s brother told him: ‘Of course, the [Biden] name didn’t hurt’, and Jim’s wife Sara, who was present, allegedly said that Joe and his brother ‘told each other everything.’
‘[Biden] stated that he was often sent to meetings to represent Hill because ‘of course, the name didn’t hurt,’ and he was the former Vice-President’s brother, or words to that effect. He repeated this statement at least twice during the interview.
‘I asked specifically if he had attended a meeting with the Saudi Ministry of Trade in mid-February 2012 to receive the final payment for the work Hill had performed. He answered that, to the best of his memory, he had been at such a meeting, and that the reason he had attended was “because of his position and relationship” with his brother.’
This is not the first time that the president’s brother has been accused of using his connections to broker deals with foreign countries. In October 2017, Jim joined his nephew Hunter to make a multi-million dollar deal to supply gas from Louisiana to China on behalf of their business partners, Chinese energy giant CEFC.
The deal allegedly included Joe as “the Big Guy” getting a cut. The Daily Mail revealed in a separate investigation: “A Louisiana-based lawyer on the other side of the deal wrote in an October 27, 2017 email that he had arranged ‘a call from Joe Biden and Hunter Biden on Monday morning to discuss the purchase of the 5 million tons of gas.’”
“Jim, who lives in Pennsylvania, has cycled over the years from nightclub owner to insurance broker to political consultant and fundraiser to startup investor and construction company executive, noted The Telegraph.
Since the GOP took control of the House Oversight Committee they have been investigating whether the Biden family sought to exploit their connections to power for profit over the years.
James Comer, House Oversight Committee Chairman, asked the Treasury Department in July of last year for information about transactions flagged as suspicious that involve Jim Biden’s activities in the Middle East, specifically in Saudi Arabia and Qatar “where James Biden acquired relationships over the course of Joe Biden’s time in elected office”.
“Evidence continues to mount that the Biden family used Joe Biden’s name to secure deals around the world to enrich themselves,” Mr Comer told The New York Post on Tuesday. ‘If Joe Biden is compromised by his family’s deals, this is a national security threat.’”
