By It’s long been documented that the Biden White House is not particularly interested in deporting those illegally in the United States, especially those who have made a claim for asylum.
In July, reported ABC News, the latest month for which official data is available, “the number of daily apprehensions of illegal border crossers averaged just over 4,300.
The rise in migrants may indicate that new policies put in place by the Biden administration in May, which initially kept numbers low, may now be having less of an impact.
The new policies make it harder for migrants to seek asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border and easier for them to seek lawful entry to the U.S. from their home countries, a new strategy the Biden administration enacted after Covid-19 border policies expired in mid-May. Before the policy change, daily apprehensions of illegally border crossers had reached a record high of more than 10,000.”
As tens of thousands have arrived in various liberal-run cities, even Democrats have attacked the White House for its inability to secure the border and deport those here illegally.
Many have wondered for quite some time what it would take for Biden to deport a family.
Now we finally have an answer: they have to be homeschooling evangelicals living in a red state for over a decade who fled Germany to escape that country’s repressive public schooling laws.
A fundamentalist Christian family who sought asylum in the U.S. so that they couldn’t be fined for homeschooling their children in Germany now faces deportation after spending 15 years living in Tennessee, writes The Messenger.
Uwe and Hannelore Romeike initially fled to the U.S. in 2008 because “God was calling them to homeschool their five children” — something that is only allowed in very narrow circumstances in Germany, according to the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), who represents the family.
The Romeikes said they had been fined some $9,000 for violating Germany’s law against homeschooling, Knoxville’s WBIR reported. They took their kids out of school because they believed German schools delivered an “anti-Christian” message.
An immigration judge in the U.S. originally approved the family’s asylum application. But the Obama-era Department of Justice later challenged the ruling, arguing that Germany’s law applied equally to everyone within the country and didn’t discriminate against particular religions. The family eventually had their asylum status revoked.
The Romeikes unsuccessfully appealed the decision in 2013. Since then, they’ve lived in the U.S. under “indefinite deferred action status,” which has allowed them to remain in the country, although they have no citizenship status.
“They did not tell us anything. We don’t really know why [this is happening]. We wonder ourselves because we can’t understand,” Uwe Romeike told ‘Fox & Friends Weekend’ on Sunday.
Germany outlawed homeschooling in 1918 and, as anyone who knows a little bit of history remembers, the decades that followed were a complete debacle for the country, culminating in the horrifying rise of the Third Reich and its defeat by the Allies in 1945.
During a routine check-in in early September, the Biden-controlled agency informed the Romeikes that they would need their passports in four weeks because they’d be shipped back to Germany.
“They did not tell them why,” Boden told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “They were just told there was a change in orders. We don’t know where the orders come down from, they may have come to the local office from the field office director or the deputy Field Office Director, which probably came from ICE headquarters. Whether it came from the Biden administration or somebody more at the executive level, we don’t know, just the change in orders, get travel documents and get ready to go is effectively what they’re told.”
According to the outlet, “the parents were also reportedly given no written document explaining the situation or the next steps, nor were they given instructions regarding what would happen to their two minor children, who are 12 and 10 years old and were born in the U.S., according to Boden. He said that the Romeike’s five adult children’s status is also of concern; some are married to U.S. citizens and others are not.”
“We just don’t know at this point, which is part of the scary nature of it,” Boden told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “You can imagine showing up in two weeks and not knowing ‘Will they take me or my wife into custody and then what happens to our two minor children who are literally US citizens?’ So the uncertainty of this is just remarkable.”
The Home Schol Legal Defense Association has taken on the family’s case. A petition of over 100,000 signatures was sent to the White House and met with a response that might as well have been written by ChatGPT.
The administration stated, “But while we can’t comment on this particular issue,” the White House wrote, “we know that homeschooling is a popular option for many parents pursuing high academic standards for their children. Homeschooling can provide young people with the resources and attention they need to succeed academically, and we understand why their parents value this freedom.”
HSLDA Chairman Michael Farris voiced his concerns about the administration’s response and its selective treatment of current unauthorized immigrants, often referred to as “dreamers,” who were allowed to remain in the country while actively pursuing the deportation of a particular family.
“No one can understand why the White House is showing so much leniency to millions of immigrants who have come here illegally in hopes of securing better jobs, but is so determined to deport this one family who has come to America in search of freedom for themselves and their children,” Farris stated. “This petition was the perfect opportunity for the White House to explain why this administration appealed the original grant of asylum. This was a perfect opportunity for the White House to explain the blatantly unequal treatment being received by the Romeike family. But the White House stalled for four months and said absolutely nothing.”
Is anyone really surprised?
Biden recently, and without explanation, blamed Republicans for border insecurity while saying he was committed to programs that would allow a family in a similar situation to the Romeikes to stay in the United States.
