In a deranged interview, Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, announced that Democrats have to be willing to take extreme measures amid an already tense political climate. He justified his words by claiming that “norms” were being broken by Donald Trump, but he did not specify which norms he meant.

In a clip speaking with Chuck Todd, Murphy declared, “We’re in a war right now to save this country. And so you have to be willing to do whatever is necessary in order to save the country.”

The comment drew immediate backlash, with critics warning that such language risks legitimizing violence at a moment when the nation remains unsettled by deep polarization. The timing of Murphy’s statement is particularly fraught, just hours after his interview, Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist known for speaking on campus tours and debating liberals, was assassinated while speaking in Utah.

The New York Times reported that “Charlie Kirk, a close ally of President Trump and the founder of the nation’s pre-eminent right-wing youth activist organization, was shot in the neck on Wednesday while speaking at a campus event at Utah Valley University.

Cellphone videos posted online showed people running from the event after a gunshot rang out. One video appeared to show Mr. Kirk’s head jerking back as blood poured from his neck. He had been delivering remarks while sitting under a tent with the slogan “The American Comeback.”

A university spokeswoman, Ellen Treanor, said that Mr. Kirk was struck about 20 minutes after he began speaking on campus. She said a suspect had fired at Mr. Kirk from the Losee Center, a building about 200 yards away.

Turning Point USA, founded by Charlie Kirk when he was 18, is a sprawling right-wing political organization with more than 850 campus chapters. The group sends conservative speakers to college campuses and hosts conferences that convene thousands of young people for right-wing discussions of political issues like economics, race and immigration.

Turning Point claimed a significant role in getting young people to vote for President Trump, who made inroads particularly with Gen Z men in the 2024 election. Mr. Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. referred to Mr. Kirk as “one of the true rock stars of this movement.”

MSNBC immediately appeared to claim that Kirk deserved to be killed.

Democratic Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker blamed Donald Trump for “fomenting violence,” in a shocking statement that seems to justify violence against conservatives.

Murphy’s office has so far declined to respond to the uproar, but the controversy should remind us that liberals have increasingly become more and more accepting of political violence.

Murphy has previously gone on the record as saying that the people Democrats care about most are “the undocumented people of this country.”
