The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent who fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good last week suffered internal bleeding to the torso following the incident, according to two U.S. officials briefed on his medical condition.

Jonathan Ross, a 10-year veteran with ICE, was involved in the January 7 shooting that killed Good as she tried to evade arrest during what authorities described as part of immigration enforcement operations in south Minneapolis. She had previously been attempting to obstruct ICE agents as they tried to enforce immigration law before striking Ross. The extent of Ross’s internal bleeding remains unclear.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed Ross’s injury but has not provided additional details in response to media inquiries. Videos from the scene showed Ross limping away after the incident. He has not returned to work, though the specific reason was not disclosed by sources.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem previously addressed Ross’s condition, stating he was hospitalized and released the same day. “The officer was hit by the vehicle. She hit him. He went to the hospital. A doctor did treat him. He has been released,” Noem told reporters on Jan. 7. She described Ross as an experienced law enforcement officer who believed he was defending himself and fellow agents.

U.S. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino told CBS News in an interview Sunday that Ross “has had several threats against his life,” adding, “he’s in a safe location. He’s recovering from those injuries, and we’re thankful that he’s recovering.”

The shooting has drawn significant attention amid ongoing debates over federal immigration enforcement as liberals and even elected Democrats have refused to accept that the officer was struck by Good’s vehicle before he fired shots while others have simply downplayed what happened in order to maintain their narrative against immigration enforcement. For example, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey claimed that the injury could have been gotten by closing a refrigerator door with his hip.

The Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security is pressuring Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to honor federal ICE detainers for more than 1,300 criminal illegal aliens in state custody, accusing state and city leaders of refusing to cooperate with immigration enforcement and allowing hundreds of offenders back onto the streets. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin alleged that nearly 470 criminal illegal aliens were released in Minneapolis alone and called on Walz and Frey to reverse what she described as a dangerous policy, arguing that detainers should be honored as a matter of public safety. The dispute intensified after Frey publicly told ICE agents to leave the city and issued an order restricting federal agents from using city property, while Walz similarly told the Trump administration to “leave Minnesota alone” following the fatal incident.

Vice President J.D. Vance has been taking on those critics, posting the video.

Court records indicate Ross was seriously injured in a separate incident in June in the Minneapolis area, when he was dragged by a car during an attempted arrest, requiring 33 stitches and hospital care.
