Democrats have a knack for showing who they care about, and it’s almost never regular Americans. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey Honors George Floyd on Memorial Day Before Acknowledging Fallen TroopsDemocratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey marked Memorial Day by first posting a tribute to George Floyd, the man whose 2020 death sparked nationwide unrest, before issuing a separate message honoring U.S. service members who died in defense of the country.

In a post on Twitter shortly after 10 a.m. ET on Monday, Frey wrote: “Today, we remember George Floyd, who was murdered by a former Minneapolis police officer six years ago. That moment changed our city forever.”Frey followed up with several additional posts highlighting what he described as the city’s need to “confront painful truths about race, policing, inequity, and trust,” while touting police reform efforts under his administration.
The timing drew swift backlash from users who noted the day’s primary purpose is to remember America’s fallen military heroes.
The Daily Caller captured some of the reaction. Radio host Joe Pagliarulo responded: “That’s your message on the day we memorialize those who gave their lives fighting for our freedom? THIS is your post? Disgusting.”Sports commentator Jon Root added: “Today is Memorial Day for the brave men & women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, not memorial day for criminal drug addicts who sparked some of the most destructive race riots and racist policy decisions of our lifetime.”It was not until more than two hours later that Frey posted a message honoring the troops.“Memorial Day is a time to remember the brave service members who gave their lives for our country and the freedoms we enjoy today. We owe them — and the families who carry their memory forward — our deepest gratitude,” he wrote.
Observers, including The Michael Knowles Show, highlighted that Frey devoted five posts to Floyd compared to just one for fallen service members.Floyd died on May 25, 2020. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s autopsy ruled the death a homicide due to Derek Chauvin kneeling on his neck but listed preexisting heart problems and drug abuse as contributing factors. The incident triggered protests and riots across the country that resulted in dozens of deaths and roughly $1 billion in property damage.
The episode reflects a broader pattern of some Democrats injecting partisan or unrelated political messaging into Memorial Day observances, including the photos of the 18 Americans who died fighting in Iran with a caption that read, “Remembering the Americans Who Have Died In Trump’s War With Iran.”
As conservative commentator Chris Loesch showed what it revealed about Democrarts:

Prioritizing George Floyd over America’s fallen really hammers home the misplaced priorities in parts of the Democratic Party. Frey, who was addressing the National Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C., around the time of the posts, has faced ongoing scrutiny over crime, policing, and recovery in Minneapolis since 2020 and has previously received heavy criticism for attacking Christians who prayed after a shooting at a Catholic church in 2025.
