By Getting dropped from a stadium tour over accusations of antisemitism can apparently earn a performer a city-sponsored welcome in Dearborn, Michigan. Mayor Abdullah Hammoud has invited Macklemore to perform a free concert after the rapper was removed from Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour, offering municipal backing to an entertainer whose history includes appearing onstage in a costume widely condemned as an antisemitic caricature.
“If they don’t want you performing in their stadiums, you’re always welcome in Dearborn,” Hammoud wrote Monday night. “Come put on a show here. We’ll make it a free concert, sponsored by the City, and help make it one of the best around. We stand with you and for a free Palestine. Let’s make it happen.” The invitation offered an enthusiastic endorsement without addressing the rapper’s earlier controversy.

That history goes beyond criticism of Israeli policy. During a surprise Seattle performance in 2014, Macklemore wore a black wig, fake beard and large prosthetic nose, drawing accusations that he had dressed as a Jewish caricature. Actor Seth Rogen was among those who criticized the outfit. Macklemore denied intending to portray Jews, said he had assembled a random disguise, and later acknowledged how the costume could evoke an offensive stereotype.

The episodes has plainly not disqualified him from receiving Hammoud’s support. Although the mayor’s invitation does not explicitly endorse the costume, it makes clear that Macklemore’s record poses no apparent obstacle to offering him a publicly sponsored stage and instead makes him welcome in Dearborn, where the same mayor has told Christians to leave the city.
The latest dispute followed Macklemore’s appearances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on September 4 and 5, noted Breitbart, where he opened for Sheeran wearing a keffiyeh. He told the audience that a major reason he had joined the tour was to say “Free Palestine” in large American stadiums, then performed his protest song “Hind’s Hall” while footage from Gaza appeared on the screens.
Promoter Messina Touring Group said several remaining venues would refuse to host the concerts if Macklemore stayed on the bill, threatening cancellations affecting hundreds of thousands of ticket holders. Macklemore said Sheeran told him that New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft had barred him from Gillette Stadium and encouraged other stadium owners to do the same. Kraft cited the rapper’s recent appearances and a “broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery” in explaining the decision.
Sheeran has maintained that the removal was the promoter’s decision, while Macklemore has defended his remarks and argued that attention should remain on Palestinians suffering in Gaza. The dispute has since widened, with other supporting performers withdrawing in solidarity with the rapper, according to Reuters.
Hammoud’s intervention comes amid recurring controversies over antisemitism on the left and the Democratic Party’s response to its increasingly influential anti-Israel wing. New Conservative Post has covered the removal of a prosecutor from a Stanford protest case following objections involving his public opposition to antisemitism, as well as Kamala Harris’s outreach to prominent anti-Israel progressives ahead of a possible 2028 presidential campaign. Those disputes have repeatedly raised questions about whether confronting antisemitism becomes politically inconvenient when it involves the left’s own allies.
The Democratic mayor presented solidarity with the performer as a municipal cause without addressing the concerns behind his exclusion. That should serve as another reminder of the Democrats’ antisemitism problem, especially in Michigan. There, the party’s Senate nominee tried to justify a terror attack against a synagogue and campaigns with someone who has explicitly said America deserved the attacks of September 11.

As of Wednesday, Macklemore had not publicly accepted or declined the invitation, and city officials had not announced a venue or explained what the proposed show would cost taxpayers. Hammoud has promised a concert free to attend. Whether Dearborn residents will be asked to pay for his gesture of political solidarity remains unanswered.
