A Minneapolis day care center operated by members of the Somali community reported a break-in this week, claiming that sensitive records were taken, as scrutiny intensifies around a sprawling fraud investigation into Minnesota’s human services programs.
The incident occurred Tuesday at Nakomis Day Care Center, according to manager Nasrulah Mohamed, who said an intruder entered through the kitchen area at the rear of the building, damaged a wall, and accessed the office. Mohamed said the suspect took “important documentation” including children’s enrollment information, employee records, and checkbooks—key pieces of evidence that would disprove that the center wasn’t a scam.
Video footage released by the center shows a hole punched through an interior wall in what appears to be a utility space, with stacked cinder blocks visible on the other side. According to some, in poor, more corrupt nations, that technique is used to hide money while preventing the cash from being destroyed by rodents.
However, a preliminary report from the Minneapolis Police Department stated that “no loss was reported to officers.” Police later received additional information from the center, though an updated report was not available as of publication.
A manager at the Nokomis Daycare Center in Minneapolis detailed "extensive vandalism" at the facility during a Wednesday news conference.

Mohamed suggested the break-in was connected to a viral video posted last week by YouTuber Nick Shirley, who visited several day care sites while alleging widespread fraud, noted The New York Post. Nakomis was not among the locations featured, but the video has amassed more than 110 million views.
“This is devastating news, and we don’t know why this is targeting our Somali community as one video made by a specific individual made this all happen,” Mohamed said, adding that the center has received “hateful” and “threatening” messages. “This is frightening and exhausting,” he said, calling Shirley’s content “false.”
Some have noted that the glasses the young male manager of a daycare was wearing cost thousands of dollars:

Others noted the curious way the break-in occurred:
Cement blocks in the walls looks to me like they were hiding cash.
So in third world countries they cement cash so rodents don’t nest with it .
This is typical criminal behavior.

The reported break-in comes as authorities continue investigating extensive fraud within Minnesota’s welfare programs. State and federal officials have identified at least $1 billion in improper payments tied to food, housing, and child care assistance, with some estimates placing the potential total as high as $9 billion. So far, 92 people have been arrested in connection with the probe, including 80 Somali immigrants.
On Tuesday evening, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services suspended all child care funding to Minnesota—$185 million allocated for 2025—pending verification that the funds were properly spent.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized the move in a post on X, writing, “This is Trump’s long game. We’ve spent years cracking down on fraudsters. It’s a serious issue – but this has been his plan all along. He’s politicizing the issue to defund programs that help Minnesotans.”
Meanwhile, investigations continue into day care facilities featured in Shirley’s video. One center, known for a misspelled “Quality Learing Center” sign that went viral before being corrected, appeared to be operating with children present despite conflicting state reports about whether it was officially open.
