By The National Republican Senatorial Committee is highlighting a remarkable reaction to progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan: A website that identifies itself as the Muslim Brotherhood’s official outlet celebrated his defeat of Rep. Haley Stevens and portrayed the result as a victory over supporters of Israel.
The NRSC on Friday amplified a report about an article published by Ikhwan Online following El-Sayed’s razor-thin victory in Michigan’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary. Ikhwan Online’s social media account describes the publication as the “Muslim Brotherhood official website,” according to the report.

The headline, translated by Google, was blunt, explained The Midwesterner: “Abdul Rahman al-Sayyid conquers the Zionists and runs for the Senate.”
The article described Stevens as “one of the most prominent figures supporting the occupation within the Democratic Party” and praised El-Sayed’s campaign against unconditional American military assistance to Israel.
“During his election campaign, (El-Sayed) focused on calling for the cessation of unconditional U.S. military aid to the Zionist occupation, criticizing the continued U.S. support in the war on the Gaza Strop and demanding that taxpayers’ money be redirected to domestic issues,” the translated article said.
The Brotherhood outlet portrayed the race as evidence of a larger ideological transformation among Democrats, arguing that El-Sayed’s victory showed the growing strength of the party’s progressive, anti-Israel wing. It specifically pointed to the enormous sums spent by pro-Israel groups attempting to defeat him.
That spending was substantial. Outside groups backing Stevens poured more than $60 million into the primary, including more than $30 million from AIPAC and its affiliates. El-Sayed nevertheless prevailed by less than one percentage point, leading Stevens roughly 48.5% to 47.5% with more than 95% of the expected vote counted.
El-Sayed, 41, is a former Wayne County health director who has never held elected office. He campaigned on Medicare for All, campaign-finance restrictions and ending U.S. military aid to Israel, while receiving support from progressive heavyweights including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
He will now face Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers in November for the seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. The race is expected to be one of the most important Senate contests in the country, with control of the chamber potentially hanging in the balance.
The Brotherhood outlet’s celebration is particularly useful ammunition for Republicans because El-Sayed has already faced scrutiny over people and organizations in his political orbit.
His father-in-law, Tayeb Jukaku, contributed $200,000 to the Fighting for Michigan PAC supporting El-Sayed and has served on the founding committee of the Islamic Society of North America. Jukaku also previously served as president of CAIR’s Michigan chapter and remains on its board, according to reporting based on organizational and federal records.
Both ISNA and CAIR were named as unindicted co-conspirators during the federal prosecution of the Holy Land Foundation, whose leaders were convicted of funneling millions of dollars to Hamas. Federal prosecutors also identified ISNA among entities they said “are and/or were members of the US Muslim Brotherhood,” while describing CAIR as part of the Brotherhood’s Palestine Committee or its organizations. Neither organization was convicted in the Holy Land Foundation case, and being named an unindicted co-conspirator is not itself a criminal conviction.
The Trump administration has meanwhile stepped up pressure on Muslim Brotherhood organizations overseas. In January, the Treasury Department designated the Egyptian and Jordanian branches as Specially Designated Global Terrorists over their support for Hamas, while the State Department designated the Lebanese branch as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. The Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood was subsequently designated as an FTO in March.
Republicans have increasingly connected those broader concerns to El-Sayed’s candidacy. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said during a Senate hearing last week that “Behind El-Sayed’s political rise sits a much older and more entrenched institutional network.”
It’s something the people of Michigan should note.
